What is FAMI-QS Certification?
As the front end of the food chain, animal feed and its safety has attracted more and more attention from international organizations and feed companies. Meanwhile, as animal feed has caused food safety issues and posed emerging challenges, feed regulation worldwide including the EU is becoming more stringent.
Based on European feed regulations, FAMI-QS is the only quality and safety control system for production of feed additives and pre-mixed feed applicable to entire Europe. The scheme integrates different accreditation requirements among EU member states and applies to specialty feed ingredients.
A specialty feed ingredient is defined as any intentionally added ingredient, not normally consumed as feed by itself, whether or not it has nutritional value, which affects characteristics of feed or animals/animal products and animal performance.
Scope of FAMI-QS Certification
The FAMI-QS is aligned with the high-level structure of the ISO management system, allowing operators to maintain an integrated management system. This specification is managed by the non-profit organization FAMI-QS Asbl, which coordinates the certification process in cooperation with Certification Bodies.
FAMI-QS covers the production/trade of specialty feed ingredients from the following processes: chemical, bioprocessing, mining, extraction, mixing, formulations/preparations.
The FAMI-QS system features nine aspects including management responsibility, resource management, product realization, system review, unqualified product control and statistical technology. It focuses on managers’ commitment, regulatory requirements, traceability, HACCP plan, product complaints and recalls, and requires the control of products from the whole process of procurement, production, packaging, labeling and transportation.
